As you read in my last post, Sweet T is now potty trained! I’m super excited because honestly, I didn’t know how this training session would go. But she caught on quickly and I realized some things along the way. Since I like to be fully prepared in EVERYTHING I do, I noticed a lot of people’s suggestions rang true. But also, a lot of these suggestions were for Sweet T and not me.
So I’m here to tell you, Mom, what you need to buy and understand during this process. Let’s get started!

Cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning.
Floors. Potty. Hands. Bottoms. Clothes. Consistently. Make sure you have a mop and anti-bacterial spray ready. I also made sure to Lysol everything at the end of the night (which I do anyway on her toys). Your toddler is learning, so there will be lots of accidents. Have everything you need in reaching distance is key!
Wipes are still better than tissue.
My daughter learned about tissue watching me and occasionally asks for it when she’s not using her own potty. But honestly, we still have a mountain of wipes left and they are better than using tissue.
Toddlers will learn fast, but not in 3 days.
Potty-Training really starts when they start walking and talking. Honestly, I’ve been teaching Sweet T how to use the potty for a while now. We introduced a potty to her as soon as she could walk and sit on her own. For the longest, she thought it was just a chair for her. We had it near her other toys and she would sit on it and play. Then we started using the word “potty” more often and moved the potty into the bathroom. She did NOT like this and refused to sit on it while in the bathroom, but we kept it in there. Every time I went to the rest room, I’d make sure I vocalize what I was doing so that she could do the same. I would tell her that “Mommy is going to potty” and she would point to the restroom. Then she started to copy me and sit on her on potty. SUCCESS!
Toddlers pee a lot.
Once they learn the feeling of when they have to pee, they feel it often. You will have a lot of false alarms, but it’s training them to think before they just go. I remember my daughter sitting on the potty literally 20 times in one day all at HER REQUEST. Be ready to go get up and go when your toddler is ready. We would rather our toddler let us know when they have to go!
It’s easier potty-training away from home when you have the right supplies.
Now that Sweet T is potty-trained, I am always scared of leaving the house or a place with a dependable bathroom. She’s been really good about letting me know when she has to potty. Then I was searching on Amazon and found the best SOLUTION for potty-training on the go – the fold-able potty seat! I fell out of my chair when I saw they made this. I knew I could be set from the fear of Sweet T using a gross restroom while we were out running errands. All I do is make sure she has extra clothes and undies and Clorox Wipes! Straight up life saver!
I hope these tips helps you along the way of teaching your toddler how to use the potty on their own! If you enjoyed these tips, make sure you let me know in the comments below! Be sure to follow me on Instagram for my daily highlights!
